Dora the Explorer Party Ideas and Dora Party Supplies
If you are reading this article, you have probably heard of Dora the Explorer. For those of you who haven't (presumably you don't have children), however, Dora the Explorer is a children's cartoon on Nickelodeon that has been airing since 2000. It features Dora, a seven year old little girl of Hispanic descent, who in each episode must solve a problem by going to at least three different locations and collecting items, with the help of her companion Boots the Monkey.
It was in instant hit with children as well as with their parents. Like many children's shows, it mixes entertainment with education, teaching children problem solving skills, teamwork, music, math, and Spanish language and phrases.
If you are a parent of a child who loves Dora the Explorer, have you considered the possibility of throwing a Dora the Explorer-themed birthday party for your child? This may require a bit more effort and preparation that the average birthday party, but by doing so you can turn a party into a learning experience for you child and their friends, and be a birthday party your child will never forget.
Basically, you would set up the party as a live-action Dora the Explorer episode for your child (playing the lead role, of course) and their friends to play through. Here are some hints on how to pull this off.
1. Watch Dora the Explorer
Get familiar with the basic plotline of the average episode so you know how to structure your live-action episode party.
2. Find a Role for Each Party Guest
To do this properly, you will need to send out invitations and require an RSVP, so that you know how many children are coming. Luckily, Dora the Explorer features several main characters (Dora, Boots the Monkey, Backpack, Map, Swiper the Fox, Isa the Iguana, Tico the Squirrel, among others) and lots of secondary characters. Give each child a role to play AND something their character must do to make the "episode" work-otherwise that child will feel left out, even cheated. If extra children show up that you weren't expecting, you can have them be the home audience that Dora frequently speaks to and who shout suggestions and advice at Dora.
3. Beware of Swiper the Fox
Swiper the Fox is the antagonist of the TV show. He steals the items Dora much collect to complete her quest and hides them. In the TV show, of course, Dora is always able to get the item back before the end of the episode -after all, the show is pre-scripted.
In reality, if you assign one of your child's friends the role of Swiper the Fox, given how resourceful little children can be (and how difficult it is for a parent to keep an eye on all of a dozen chaotic kids), that child could very easily swipe an item (or several) they're not supposed to and hide them where no one can find them, throwing off or even ruining your live-action "script".
There are two ways to deal with the Swiper the Fox problem. The first and easiest way is to leave the character out of your live-action Dora party altogether. The second is to "pre-script" Swiper stealing something and hiding it. If you go this route, pull the child playing Swiper aside. They them you need their help, and they have to play an important role in the story. Once you can tell you've got their full cooperation, tell them what to steal from Dora, when to do it, and the general area to hide it. Ask them to keep all this a secret, of course. If you do this right, you'll make that child feel special and important that you have chosen them for such an important role, and they won't want to let you down.
By giving Swiper something to swipe and hide in a way you can control, you'll effectively neutralize the chaotic, party-ruining potential of the Swiper character. Furthermore, the child playing Swiper will have a blast.
